What is the noise that old cars make (circa early ‘50s - late ‘80s) upon ignition? I hear it especially in carbureted cars like this ‘84 Monte Carlo; it may be exclusive to the carbureted cars. Sounds like * psssshhht *

I’ve never really thought about it, but my first guess is that it’s vacuum operated HVAC controls and such getting vacuum as the engine starts, but that would be on any car with vacuum controls. Could also have to do with airflow through the carb on startup if the choke is closed

Sounds like an intake noise. My guess is that the car has an automatic choke, and that sound is the air rushing through the carb right after it stops enriching the mixture upon startup. My truck doesn’t do that at all and I have a manual choke. It does make that noise when I hit the gas.
If you rev the engine, does it make the same noise?

Nope, only on startup.
EDIT: Just watched the revving video again, and it did make that noise.

Yup, intake then. Probably the auto choke.
